Common problems
A/C problems we hear about
- Running but not cooling: low refrigerant, a dirty outdoor coil or a failing capacitor.
- Outdoor unit won't start: often a capacitor or contactor, a quick repair.
- Ice on the lines: airflow problems or low refrigerant. Turn the system off and let it thaw.
- Old R-22 system: refrigerant for these is expensive. Replacement usually makes more sense than recharging.
Hail and your outdoor unit
Front Range hail can flatten the fins on outdoor condensers and cut efficiency. If a storm hit your neighborhood, have the unit checked; hail damage may be covered by homeowners insurance.
Questions
Good to know
When should I get my A/C serviced?
In spring, before the first hot week in June. Companies get booked up fast once temperatures hit the 90s.
Repair or replace my A/C?
If the system is over 12 to 15 years old, uses R-22 refrigerant or needs a compressor, replacement is usually the better value. A heat pump is worth comparing.
How do you choose companies?
We only work with locally owned companies that hold a current City of Thornton contractor license, carry insurance and have strong, recent Google reviews. If a company stops meeting that bar, we stop sending them customers.
Who are you, and is this free?
Thornton Home Pros is a local referral service, not a contractor. It's free for you: the company we connect you with pays us a referral fee. All quotes, work and warranties come directly from that company.
